Location

Nisyros is one of the smaller, less-developed islands in the Dodecanese, sitting between Kos and Tilos in the southern Aegean. The island is built on an active volcano, with the caldera and its craters forming the dramatic landscape at its centre and the main town of Mandraki running along the northern coast. Most of the year-round population lives in Mandraki or the port of Pali, while two traditional mountain villages, Nikia and Emporio, sit on the caldera rim. Emporio has kept much of its old character: stone houses built into the slope, narrow lanes, and direct views down into the volcano. The village emptied out in the second half of the twentieth century as residents moved closer to the coast, and many of its houses are now being slowly restored, often by buyers looking for a traditional stone property in a setting that's hard to find elsewhere in Greece.
