Behind the wall: an eighteenth-century villa with frescoes and a tower

You push open the wrought-iron gate and the village falls away behind you. What remains is a courtyard: the villa on one side, on the other a brick portico of four arches, double height, cool through July. Painted quotations run along its back wall. Someone here once had time. It is the first impression and it turns out to be the right one — this is a house where people stayed.

Its history runs from the late 1700s to the present. The plan is L-shaped, as country nobility built. The older, formal wing carries frescoes across walls and vaults, original terracotta floors and polychrome terrazzo — rooms whose taste has simply never been interfered with. The plainer wing served as storehouse and servants’ quarters; beneath it lies a substantial vaulted cellar with the classic Piedmontese crutin, where wine holds its temperature without help.

From the entrance the eye travels through one painted room into the next, salon into salottino. A double frescoed staircase rises to the first floor, and a second service stair opens that floor independently — useful if you ever want to separate guests, or a let, from your own part of the house. At the top is the tower. On a clear day the view runs from Monviso across to Monte Rosa.

Outside: 3,000 m² of garden, entirely walled. The village is all around you and you notice none of it. Room for a long table under the trees and evenings that overrun. Two spaces in a private garage, and some 220 m² of outbuildings that include a second, self-contained dwelling — a guest house, or income.

The house needs conservative restoration and complete new services. That is not a footnote; it is the brief. But the shell is sound, the frescoes are there, the floors are still down. This is not a rescue. It is a finishing. For anyone looking for exactly that kind of project, it is an unusually honest starting point: 786 m² under your own roof, in a village that is genuinely lived in, in a landscape on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

And the practicalities. Alessandria is ten kilometres away, Casale Monferrato a little further. Turin, Milan and the Ligurian coast are each a little over an hour by car — as are the Barolo and Barbaresco hills. From the UK, low-cost flights run to Turin, Milan and Genoa from London, Manchester, Bristol and Edinburgh; the drive from Turin airport is about an hour, from Genoa slightly less. Close enough for a long weekend, far enough that nobody drops in.
