Investing in a second home in Spain

  • General
  • Spain

Are you finally going to realise your dream of buying a second home in Spain? A second home in Spain can be a smart investment, especially now that interest rates on savings at banks remain low and property prices in Spain are attractive.

Imagine waking up in the morning in your apartment, villa or bungalow on one of the Spanish Costa ‘s. The sun is shining and it is pleasantly warm. You have all the freedom to organise your day and only have to walk a short distance before you reach the sea, for example to take a walk along the beach, have a cup of coffee on the promenade or enjoy a meal of Spanish cuisine in one of the many restaurants.

Living in your money
Buying a second home in Spain on the coast is a dream for many, but also quite an exciting step. After all, there are so many things you can do with your savings: not only investing, but also investing or putting the money in a savings account, for example. However, a quick calculation shows that saving is currently not very lucrative.

Low interest rate on savings
The Telegraaf recently published an article in which savings expert Amanda Bulthuis writes that savers need not count on higher interest rates on their savings in 2016 either. At major banks such as ING, Rabobank and ABN Amro, you currently get only 0.7 per cent interest on the money in your savings account. And the highest savings interest rates are also likely to fall below 1 per cent in 2016.

Second home in Spain: Interesting investment

The alternative, enjoying your money in a sunny climate with your whole family by investing in a (holiday) home in Spain, is then a lot more attractive. House prices in Spain are currently low in a recovering housing market. That makes buying a house in Spain an interesting investment under the sun.

Invest and enjoy
Moreover, asset manager Schroders has highlighted Spain as a country where the economy will continue to grow briskly in 2016, by as much as 4 per cent. Your investment will certainly retain its value or increase in value. So by buying a second home in Spain, you will enjoy doubly: not only living in a sunny climate, but also your savings!
